This campaign will bring safe, clean and reliable LED solar and wind-up lights to very poor women in Kenya, reducing their dependence on expensive, dangerous fuel-based lighting.
Millions of women in Kenya use toxic and flammable kerosene to light their homes. In addition to being inefficient light, kerosene causes lung and eye problems. Furthermore, rural women often walk miles to buy small amounts of kerosene that cause household fires, burns, loss of assets and even loss of life. Children drink kerosene believing it to be water. Many women also tell heartbreaking stories about the havoc that kerosene wreaks on their lives.
Women will be trained in the use, care and maintenance of Lifelights, which will brightly light their homes, enabling the women to extend daylight hours, walk safely at night and engage in a range of productive activities after dark.
The impact of these lights is enormous in terms of both increased night time productivity and safety from burns and fires where families could lose everything.
