Sponsor Births project report - March 2012

By the end of March 2012, Sponsor Births project has supported the deliveries of 150 women. Another 32 poor women have been identified for sponsorship and their delivery is due in the coming months.
Sponsor Births project has focused more on women who lost their husbands during their pregnancy, either due to desertion by the husband or death of the husband. In either case, the woman is put to undue emotional stress. The stress is further aggravated by sudden economic shock caused by loss of earnings of the bread winner of the family. Even those women who are otherwise able to manage themselves tend to lose confidence in themselves. This can lead to distress during pregnancies and such women need emotional and financial support.
One such case is of Ms. Saritha, working in a small scantily equipped private school as a teacher. Her earnings were meager do not support her family. Her husband was a casual labour and helping hand to a technician. The family was able to live on with both the persons earning. She lost her husband in an accident when she was in her fifth month of pregnancy. All the little savings that the family could build up were spent on the last rites of her husband. Having lost her husband, she did not get much support from her in-laws. Nor her parents were of much help to her. Meeting the costs related to pregnancy became difficult for her. As she worked in a private establishment with no social security benefits, she could not get any maternity benefit. As she had lost her husband, she could not even raise enough money to meet the cost of delivery. Sponsor Births project helped her by regular counseling and supported her delivery. She delivered on 16th March 2012 and is blessed with a girl. She has thanked the unknown donors for the support.
Sponsor Births thanks all the donors and requests them to spread the word. Sponsor births – Deliver smiles.
