Summary

HardtHaven Children's Home newest outreach program will provide life saving care and medication to 10 late stage AIDS patients in Ghana. By providing access to top of the line medical care and medication that is currently unavailable to these AIDS patients, we aim to dramatically extend and improve the quality of life for these 10 adolescents and adults.

What is the issue, problem, or challenge?

There are currently more than 260,000 people living with HIV/AIDS in Ghana; the majority of these are women and children. While the Ghanaian government does provide care and medication to some people living with HIV/AIDS, these programs have very limited resources, personnel, and medication. The HIV medication currently available in Ghana is so limited that it does not work for many people living with HIV/AIDS, leading to an early and painful death. This project will start with 10 AIDS patients.

How will this project solve this problem?

HardtHaven's AIDS Health Care program aims to save the lives of patients who have stopped responding to the medication available in Ghana. We do this by providing them with top of the line care and medication, and following up with each patient to ensure that the medication continues to work. This project will start by providing care and medication to 10 women and children with late-stage AIDS, and will responsibly scale up the number of patients in the program over time.

Potential Long Term Impact

By providing care and medication that can save the lives of these 10 women and children with late-stage AIDS, this program will allow these patients to once again become productive members of their communities. Once rehabilitated back to health, the women can again provide for their families, and the children can return to school. Through responsible expansion, this program will continually add women and children with advanced HIV who are in dire need of care.

Project Message

I want to grow up to be an inventor, my medicine that I take right now makes me tired and sick and I cannot go to school most days. I want to take medicine that makes me feel better, not more sick.
- Kofi A., 16 year old boy who will take part in this program
