Our training seminar took place last February in Istanbul, Turkey and was attended by 11 physicians from all parts of Libya. The training was led by Dr. Jose Cuadros from UC Berkeley School of Optometry, who was much impressed by the diligence and hard work of the attendees, all of whom successfully completed the course. This was a “Train the Trainer” event, so this means that these 11 physicians will be able to train many other doctors, nurses and technicians in Libya.
This project is the first of its kind to become established in Libya. It is important not only for its value in treating this particular problem, which is at epidemic proportions, but in providing examples of creative approaches to medical assistance during a period of high political and social instability. We believe even modest successes in this environment can make a tremendous difference in morale and levels of local motivation.
We are currently scouting three fixed locations in Libya to serve as pilot projects. A fourth camera will be used as a mobile unit to provide screening capacity at special events in a variety of locations including shopping centers, schools, universities, libraries and downtown squares. This project has been widely reported in the press including articles published by UC Berkeley News, the Libya Herald and the Huffington Post. We are also looking forward to TV coverage of our project by an internationally syndicated news service which is planning a trip to Libya once the first pilot project is established in Tripoli or Kabaw.
This progress would not be possible without the generous financial support of our donors. Your contributions enable us to continue this work, which is truly needed. Thank you!
