Summary
The library program consists of a strategic approach to establish multi-lingual libraries within primary and secondary schools for disadvantaged children.
What is the issue, problem, or challenge?
The concept of a school library is virtually non-existent in many rural schools in Cambodia. Outside of the major cities, children’s books are considered to be luxury items. There is very little supplemental reading in addition to the government curriculum. Therefore, children have limited access to educational resources at a young age. The main beneficiaries of the program are disadvantaged children in rural areas. The aim is to help spark an interest in reading at a young age.
How will this project solve this problem?
To establish libraries containing local language and English books. These libraries will mainly be in rural villages with community schools (such as Battambang and Siem Reap Provinces) where they will serve a wide age group of students.
Potential Long Term Impact
The goal of the project is to promote reading and education by establishing libraries in schools with the greatest needs. We aim to support the capacity of local teachers through library training which can be incorporated into classroom curriculum.
Project Message
We are providing disadvantaged children with the gift of education. We hope to encourage children to develop a love for reading.
