Learning Across Languages Youth Mentoring

While school is out of session, YouthFriends continues to develop and fine tune the Learning Across Languages training manual.  This is one of the most critical parts of the program - to make sure our mentors are equipped with the knowledge and compassion required to effectively create positive change in their mentee's life.

YouthFriends is partnering with Kansas City, MO Mayor Sly James, to implement the Turn the Page program. Integrating the Learning Across Languages program with the Turn the Page program is a fundamental and key boost for our youngest and newest Americans.  We encourage you to watch this video that helps to explain our project: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5gJEDKPX61c

Additionally, YouthFriends is currently recording podcasts to be available to all mentors, to help them deal with any issue that may come up with their YouthFriend during their weekly visit. This on-going and technologically advanced way of training our mentors, will only strengthen the program.

Our demographics in all school districts continue to change.  We are seeing more and more immigrants from every nation - from refugee children to children from war-torn countries.  YouthFriends is proud to make a difference in these young people's lives.

One elementary classroom we visited at the end of the school year had 22 New American students in the 3rd grade. There were 20 different languages spoken among the students.  Two of the students both spoke Spanish, however, one child was from Mexico and the other was from Cuba. Even though they shared a language, the cultural barriers were vast.  YouthFriends helps to break down these barriers to inspire, teach, and care for the young students who someday will be the next generation of leaders.

We appreciate your support of YouthFriends Learning Across Languages.  It makes a real difference in the lives of not only the children we serve, but in their families and throughout the community.
