Summary
Support the preservation of Yaqui and Mayo languages, two ethnic groups from Sonora, Mexico, and over 9000 kids will learn and practice their mother tongue helped by their bilingual mentors
What is the issue, problem, or challenge?
When an ethnic group starts losing their language, they begin to lose their identity too and soon the culture is dead, causing sometimes social problems (drugs, alcoholism, gangs). This is why in our program learning by playing we support different ethnic groups in the preservation of the language starting with little kids, we have done 6 articles as didactic material that help the bicultural mentors, to teach the kids their maternal language with the goal of preserving their cultural identity.
How will this project solve this problem?
With the elaboration of this didactic material the native teachers will have a tool that's going to help them to carry on programs for the preservation of the yaqui and mayo languages and also the entire society will have a view of these cultures.
Potential Long Term Impact
The project is going to provide 257 schools with didactic materials that will help them to participate in the XXI century without loosing their important heritage.
Project Message
Yaqui and mayo kids will be able to reach information on their own language and at the same time reassure and be proud of their cultural identity and values.
