Summary
Community leadership training for youth in under served Los Angeles neighborhoods.
What is the issue, problem, or challenge?
Our project serves at risk youth between 15 and 25 in underserved Los Angeles communities through art and cultural literacy programs. Young people in these communities are particularly vulnerable to the struggles of urban life: poverty, poor education and gang violence.
How will this project solve this problem?
LA Commons community based projects allow young people to gain the skills, confidence and vision needed to become leaders in their communities. We've worked with young people creating light pole banners, murals, woodblock prints and other public art.
Potential Long Term Impact
Through our community based art and cultural literacy programs young people become stakeholders in their communities and in that process transform their lives and their neighborhoods.
Project Message
"The Central American heritage installation beautified the park and changed everything. Now, rather than being afraid to go there, we see the park and the community as ours.”
