AfricAid proudly announces the graduation of our 2nd class of Kisa Scholars from Secondary School! At the end of February, 60 amazing young women graduated from Edmund Rice, Orkeeswa, Enaboishu, Moringe and Arusha Secondary School. Now equipped with vital leadership and life skills, these young women are ready to go back to their home communities to mentor younger girls and bring lasting change to their communities. We are so excited to see what the future holds for these newest graduates!
Tanzania has one of the lowest secondary school graduation rates for girls in the world. Only 5% of Tanzanian girls graduate from high school, and AfricAid is working to improve this statistic in order to develop future female leaders for Tanzania. Girls and young women face extraordinary challenges to participate in education including: lack of money for school fees, unsafe conditions to and from school and even in the classroom, gender privacy concerns, and a culture of inequality.
The Kisa Project provides young women with a pathway to success during their last two years of secondary school by helping them prepare for university, or a professional career, or by teaching them how to set up their own business if they are interested in entrepreneurship. As the Forum for African Women Educationalists has recognized, "In sub-Saharan Africa, the social return on girls' education is estimated at...18.2% for secondary education, the highest rate in the world."
Over the next three years, the Kisa Project will impact the lives of over 15,000 young women and their communities through enrolling over 1,400 young women as Kisa Scholars in 32 partner schools and providing mentorship through the Kisa Scholars to over 14,000 young girls. Research demonstrates the significant benefits to women: educated girls are three times less likely to contract HIV/AIDS; children of African mothers with five years of education have a 40% better chance of living to age 5.
In the first year of A-level, I joined Kisa Project. It's a project which deals with providing leadership education to African girls. They inspired me and made me realize I want to be a role model.
