Project report - April 2013

The storm caused severe damage to the greenhouse. We are still repairing the damages, but we hope to plant a full crop this year.

The Educational Service is in full swing year-round. Huge thank you to our toy and book drive sponsors: Lowenstein Sandler's employees, friends and family, Prudential, the Association of Latino Professionals in Finance and Accounting, New Jersey After 3, First Book, and Intelligent Design!

Would your company, church, club or family like to brighten the futures of children of Newark? Email Michaela@kidscorp.com to learn how you can help by collecting starter plants, new or gently used children's books, school supplies, book bags, and more!

Stay tuned for more updates. As always, thanks for your generosity and ongoing support!

Kids Farm - Project Report # 4

Kids at Kids Farm
Kids at Kids Farm

Dear friends,

This is such an exciting time of the year! The Kids Garden and greenhouse have been planted and everything is growing like weeds. We have cucumbers, broccoli, kale, squash, green beans, basil, lettuce, and eggplant growing in the greenhouse. We also have onions, tomatoes, corn, watermelon, squash, and parsley growing in the garden.

Our focus on health and nutrition has also started to take an effect on the children at the Kids School. We recently took a poll of the children in grades Kindergarten through 5th. We asked, "What is your favorite food?" To our surprise, 80% of them said fresh fruit or vegetables!

Kids Summer Camp has begun and will run through August 10th. For the next six weeks, over 2000 kids in Kids Corp's network of academic summer programs will spend four days each week in school with our certified teachers and college student mentors; learning the critical fundamentals of literacy, math, science, history and life skills. The students will be able to put all of their science and math to work in the garden and use hands on exercises to bring the connections to life. Throughout the summer, we will also teach healthier ways to eat and the importance of exercise.

As always, thank you so much for your generosity! We are blessed to have this critical piece of knowledge at our finger tips and available to our kids!

Best regards,

Kids Camp - October 2011
Kids Camp - October 2011

As the cooler weather approaches, we are busy preparing the green house for the winter. We are working on the electrical wiring, irrigation system, and winter gardening.

Our Prudential volunteers recently planted: cabbage, cauliflower, kale, and broccoli in the greenhouse. Once they sprout, we will harvest the plants so that Kids Camp can use the produce in the meals they prepare for the children. We have big garden plans for next year and we will keep you posted on the results.

Many thanks for your ongoing support!

Kids Corporation would like to take another moment to thank all of you that have so generously donated to the development of the Kids Farm. We look forward to feeding fresh produce to our kids as well as teaching them about eating healthy food, gardening, and organic farming. Our next goal is to have an electrician wire the greenhouse.

This week, we started our Kids Summer School and Kids Summer Camp for 2,000 children in our K-6 summer programs. The children will take weekly day trips to Kids Camp for environmental science, team-building, swimming, fine arts and health lessons in July and August. Over 200 different children per day visit camp for 6 weeks and over 350 children receive free medical exams during the summer.

Thanks again for all the wonderful support! We wouldn't be able to accomplish what we do without it.
