Summary

Kick4Life support some of the most vulnerable youth in Southern Africa, many orphaned by the HIV crisis in a country where 23.4% of the population are positive, and many young people end up living on the street. Our programmes not only teach life skills to young participants, helping them to choose healthy behaviours and protect themselves from HIV, but also basic literacy, numeracy, and the value of teamwork, and assist them to develop income-generating activities to support their futures.

What is the issue, problem, or challenge?

23% of Lesotho's population is HIV positive, and more than 180,000 children are orphaned by the disease. Youth face multiple disadvantages including high unemployment; many get involved in prostitution & crime and are vulnerable to malnutrition and HIV infection. A strong patriarchal culture also limits vital conversations between adults& youth about taboo subjects like sex& relationships. We give participants the knowledge, skills & opportunities needed to build better futures on their own terms

How will this project solve this problem?

We support equal numbers of girls&boys attaching each to a trained mentor for emotional support and referrals to appropriate help networks. We provide a positive, environment that strongly promotes healthy behaviors. Kick4Life's 2009 project, Maseru Street League, was a stepping stone to building positive relationships with extremely vulnerable youth. The current project objective is to provide focused, high quality care for smaller numbers in specific areas, especially life-skills & health.

Potential Long Term Impact

The project provides job training & life skills to all participants; several have been assisted into permanent employment whilst 24 street youth have been reunited with their families & re-enrolled into school. From 2009 Kick4Life's various programs have reached thousands of youth: 3500 have graduated through our HIV education curriculum alone. With our assistance many participants gain stable jobs, and all come away increasingly empowered to make healthy choices & take control of their future
