Summary
We have created vegetable gardens and chicken egg farms that help keep Kenyan children in school. When local parents learn that their children can get a balanced meal at school -- they send them back. And when Kenyan school children eat a good meal at lunch -- they study better!
We also provide solar lighting so that poor Kenyan school children can do their homework...and we are now supporting a woman who takes in little girls who are running away from forced marriage and FGM.
What is the issue, problem, or challenge?
Situated halfway between Mombasa and Nairobi, Mtito Andei is a barren area that serves as the resting point between the international port and capital city, creating wide spread prostitution as women are left with few alternatives for income. Venereal diseases, most notably HIV/AIDS, have spread through the community, killing parents, creating orphans, and infecting the unborn. There is also continual human-wildlife conflict and over exploitation of natural resources.
How will this project solve this problem?
We have successfully convinced local parents to send their children back to school because of a successful school lunch program. Our vegetable garden and chicken egg farm is tended to by children (after school).
We have also built a Cultural Center for one of the area's poorest tribes.
Potential Long Term Impact
This vocational school will provide a medium for the community members of Mtito Andei and the surrounding areas to learn about sustainable ways to improve their well-being through alternative and improved methods of income.
Obviously, our school lunch programs keep children in school and an education promises them a chance to a better life.
Project Message
Our children's gardens have helped to increase the enrollment of a Mtito Andei primary school by 30% in just two years!
