In our January update we mentioned that we were set to distribute 20,000 Huru Kits in the first half of 2012; we can now proudly report that we're on track to reach more than 60,000 girls this year! This is a big accomplishment for us, and it wouldn't have been possible without your support. But as impressive as the numbers might sound, it's important to remember that each one represents a girl with a story and a dream.
Faith is among the tens of thousands of girls we've worked with over the past few years. She was kind enough to share her story with us, and we wanted to use this update as an opportunity to show you the impact that your generosity has had on her life and the lives of girls throughout Kenya.
My name is Faith. I live in a single house in a slum called Mukuru Kwa Njenga. I am 13 years old. I have two brothers who are in school like me. I live with my mother only. She is a tailor and she makes t-shirts for both men and women which helps her to get some money for us and buy food.
In class 8 first terms I heard about the Huru kits from visitors who came to our school. They taught us how to use and how to wash it. We were given Huru kits for girls who have started their periods. I was one of them and I was very happy because I was given. I used to struggle very much during my periods. Sometimes I could go to my mother and ask for money to buy the disposable ones but sometimes she couldn’t be able to provide enough money so I had to borrow from my friends.
Huru pads have really helped me and changed my life. Since I was given those pads I have never missed school or borrow from friends. I come to school daily and I am always clean because I don’t have to struggle looking for pads. Huru pads are reusable and can last for long if taken care of.
School is important to me because I learn something new everyday. While in school I am busy doing something that can shape my future. Some girls have dropped out of school because they do not have money to buy the disposable pads. Girls like me are very lucky because we have the Huru pads that are reusable and easy to maintain
My dreams are that when I grow up I would also like to help girls who are just like me and don’t have money or their parents cannot afford the money to buy them every month. I would also introduce to them the reusable ones that can help them for long without struggling so much.
