Osanko Child Poverty Relief believes that teenage and adolescent girls in our rural communities who are already giving birth to fatherless children must be supported with practical skills that enable them to get their lives back. We provide these Marginalized Young Women with Life Skills training and opportunities for improved livelihoods so that they can fully participate in society and raise healthy children.

What is the issue, problem, or challenge?

We are addressing complex and interrelated challenges of the exploitation of the girl-child, especially the most vulnerable in marginalized rural communities where they inherit generational poverty, illiteracy, early pregnancies and death. We want to give them every chance to become financially independent and raise their consciousness so that they go on to make informed choices and decisions because they know better.

How will this project solve this problem?

We are working with the village chief and elders to raise the consciousness of the men in the community to have a better understanding of their sexual responsibilities and choices, how careless decisions affect the young teenage girls they conjugate with, the importance of protection from HIV/AIDS and use of condoms. Provide life skills, vocational training for teenage mothers in dressmaking and hairdressing.Train teenage mothers in child care and nutrition for their babies.

Potential Long Term Impact

The project will empower 30 pregnant teenage girls and vulnerable adolescent single mothers in the rural Gomoa-East district to overcome their harsh lives through education and informal training. We support the girls who have academic promise to continue formal education after their children are born, by providing remedial classes while pregnant. We support young mothers with vocational skills in hairdressing, culinary arts, and dressmaking so they can earn a living and become independent.
