Job Shadows Help Teens Bridge the Gap

Hello Job Shadow Supporters,

Thank you for supporting SIU teens in 2012 as Job Shadow Sponsors, Hosts and Donors! For our sponsors/hosts, the teens who job shadowed at your business site loved meeting you and hearing what you do at work. You made the world of work real through an interesting learning experience! For our donors, the teens appreciate the opportunity you provided for them to participate in the Job Shadow event.

Job shadows help teens bridge the gap between school and career by allowing them to discover new career fields and business sites they have never heard of before or had only dreamed of visiting. Two of our 2012 Job Shadow participants were fortunate enough to be selected for a Job Shadow at the Nike Campus in Beaverton, OR. They were very excited to spend the morning with their job shadow sponsors and learn about the jobs they have at Nike. These jobs became a reality for the teens who had only read about worldwide marketing and distribution methods online before. This was an experience they will never forget and in the words of one youth, "The best experience of my life"!

Job Shadow participants learn about new career fields, businesses and real jobs as well as how to relate to people in the professional workplace. This type of personal link also helps teens to understand that family-wage careers are within their reach if they are willing to apply themselves at school and succeed in college.

Step It Up, Inc. is gearing up to bring our successful Job Shadow event to 50 teens in 2013. The 2012 Job Shadow was so beneficial for 25 teens, we are recruiting business partners and supporters now to make this event even more successful in 2013. The cost for each teen to complete a one-day workplace preparedness workshop, attend a 3-hour job shadow and attend the closing event celebration is $100/youth. This brings our budget for 2013 to $5,000 with the business partners paying for half of this cost. We are depending on your support to help us raise the other $2,500 before the end of 2012. Please join SIU in this successful effort!

Thank you again for supporting Job Shadows for teens.
