Summary

Islands are taking action to build resilient and sustainable communities through innovative partnerships. Despite their small size and significant vulnerabilities facing islands, leaders of island countries are taking big steps at local to global levels. These inspired island solutions in action are "bright spots" that exemplify how together we can build on what is working to conserve and sustainably utilize our invaluable natural resources and protect our planet.

What is the issue, problem, or challenge?

Never before have islands been so at risk. Their peoples, cultures, oceans and ecosystems are threatened by climate change, invasive species and unsustainable development. Islands constitute less than 5% of the Earth's landmass yet provide habitat for 40% of all listed Endangered species . 95% of bird, 90% of reptile and 70% of mammal extinctions have been on islands, primarily the result of invasive species. Urgent action is needed to halt and reverse these trends to save our precious islands.

How will this project solve this problem?

Conservation success is built upon initiatives that work - bright spots. Bright spots initiatives that are making a difference in advancing conservation and sustainable livelihoods. To build resilient and sustainable communities, we need to build on what is working and upon those bright spots that have the potential to be scaled and replicated. Take action and invest in what works! Invest, scale and replicate island bright spots.

Potential Long Term Impact

Successful initiatives - island bright spots - are scaled across island communities in support of large scale conservation commitments such as the Micronesia Challenge: a commitment of the leaders of the region to conserve 30% marine and 20% of terrestrial ecosystems by 2020.
