Greetings from Yuwa.
As we enter the Summer season, there is great and exciting news on the ground over in India. Here are some highlights:
-The girls at Yuwa have been invited to participate in Spain this coming June/July at the Donosti Cup! (http://www.donosticup.com) This is Spain's largest soccer tournament and the tournament as agreed to sponsor all Yuwa girl expenses for the two week trip. In addition many other sponsors are contributing to support transportation costs for the Yuwa group.

-Our Executive Director Franz Gastler was recently featured on the Minneapolis/St. Paul MN AM 950 Wake Up Call Show. Franz along with Rose Thomson (Yuwa Intern) discussed Yuwa in detail and how the soccer programs are positively impacting youth girls in India. http://thewakeupcallradioshow.com/
-Yuwa named one of Yahoo! India's 12 unsung hero's of 2012. Yahoo!'s unsung heros is an attempt to honor those who have done some extraordinary and selfless work. This is Yahoo!'s salute to the unsung heroes of 2012. Yuwa is proud to accept this honor.
-Franz was recently featured in a India Today article featuring five leaders have have been instrumental in spreading awareness.

It is amazing Fall is upon us and as the season has turned, many great things have transpired on Yuwa’s end since our last correspondence.

Yuwa Girls Visit US During September Trip!
Seema and Benita two girls from Yuwa and Hutup village traveled to Washington D.C for two weeks in September to take part in a US state department soccer exchange for Indian and Pakistani girls. Both girls were selected as a result of leadership qualities, commitment to Yuwa, and English language skills. It was a an excellent experience for both of these young girls, as they participated in top notch soccer instruction, cultural activities, and interaction with a diverse set of exchange attendees.

ISESE Competition: Yuwa – Kicking it new school in India
Yuwa was highlighed in the Innovative Secondary Education for Skills Enhancement (ISESE) Competition blog series features the winners, runners-up and five additional models that have been selected due to their innovation, impact, sustainability and potential for replication in Africa and Asia.

Nike GameChangers Center is near completion!
Yuwa was awarded the $25,000 grant from Nike and Architecture for Humanity in 2011 to build a soccer field and academic center on the ground in India. After months of construction the facility is nearly completed. This complex will serve a number of Yuwa youth for many years to come. Click here to view most recent photos:
Colorado Rush Soccer Invites Yuwa Girl- Pusha to visit and participate in Academy
14 year old Yuwa soccer stand-out has been invited to travel to U.S (Colorado) for 6 months to live and participate in the Colorado Rush’s exclusive soccer academy. She will be attending school, while honing her soccer skills through 1st class soccer instruction. This will be a great experience for her, as she will be staying with a host family while experiencing a new culture! Stay tuned to website for updates! www.yuwa-india.org

Football gives girls of a village near Ranchi a shot at a new life
One of India's largest newspapers "The Indian Express" recently ran a featured article on Yuwa. The highlights include the girls success on the field and how it is contributing to a better education and livelyhood. Also featured is Yuwa's continual push for land dedicated to the program.

3 Yuwa girls chosen for U-13 India National Camp
The head of women's teams for the All-India Football Federation was in the villages, and she was impressed enough to take a big political risk by taking 3 girls directly from Yuwa to the U-13 national camp! Shivani (11yo), Neeta (12) and Manisha (12) were the Yuwa girls selected. Shivani has been described as a "tyrant" on defense and has observed in photos that her feet never seem to be on the ground (although maybe it's the same for everyone... here's Neeta http://bit.ly/wxVkVg). Nike Gamechangers Classroom
After much anticipation, development of the Yuwa classroom and play field complex is underway!

The project is expected to be complete in May. Stay tuned for update in a few months!
In 2011, Yuwa won an award to make a new educational facility and football field with the help of a design team and $25,000; this was awarded by GAMECHANGERS. Gamechangers is a campaign run by Architecture for Humanity and Nike Inc. to empower youth through sports by proposing programs that spur social and economic development in a community.
Yuwa wins National Award on NDTV
In a Grand Finale, NDTV celebrated the success of the ‘Marks for Sports’ campaign with the ‘Spirit of Sport’ awards held at the ITC Maurya Sheraton today. As part of the celebration, NDTV acknowledged excellence in sports by honoring renowned sports personalities across 14 categories.

Recent Media Coverage
"Yuwa is not just an initiative, but a movement now" - Franz Gastler After a close match with a senior India woman squad, two Yuwa players were named to the India under-13 squad. Read the story from the Hindustan Times.
Joanna Lohman and Lianne Sanderson traveled to Jharkhand to visit Yuwa in January. Lohman and Sanderson have founded the JoLi Academy, a for-profit business that has a philanthropic bent. They are interested in spreading their talents and learning from Yuwa's success. Read more on ESPNW.
