From Tuesday 19th March to the 26th March 2013, Desert2Surf ran another Stand and Lead program - Trip South 2013. Three indigenous boys from the remote Northern Territory community of Beswick (Wugularr) travelled south to surf and engage in cultural exchange activities
The greatest impact of the funding was being able to place Adam in a leadership role. For the duration of Stand and Lead – Trip South 2013 he saw himself as a leader and behaved accordingly. He was spokesperson for the group during all the cultural exchange activities and he managed to communicate with new people in a mature and thoughtful manner. Hopefully his growing confidence throughout Trip South 2013 will carry over into his role with the Roper Gulf Shire back in his Community.
The (new) AFL component of Trip South 2013 had a fantastic impact, not only on the boys but also on Desert2Surf. For Desert2Surf it forged a new relationship with the Melbourne Football Club which promises to be rewarding and supportive of D2S programs into the future. For the boys it was a once in a lifetime experience (which they handled with aplomb) which served to reinforce the boys’ sense of self-worth, capability and achievement.
Your donation helped Desert2Surf to achieve its goal of assisting indigenous youth to develop communication and leadership skills to use in their communities. To achieve its goal of providing young indigenous people with the opportunity to travel outside their community and participate in activities conducive to their physical and mental health and well-being. To achieve its goal of generally promoting the physical and mental health and general welfare of young indigenous people living in isolated and disadvantaged communities.
