Indigenous youth in Australia are often neglected and receive very little support. Recreational trips with a focus on surfing can act as a catalyst to engage, inspire and empower these young people.
Isolation and a shocking lack of community resources greatly disadvantage many Indigenous young people in remote communities. Receiving little support or opportunity to engage in positive recreational opportunities can contribute to poor life choices and low educational aspirations. Poor choices in relation to diet, exercise, drug use and sexual behavior are all potential outcomes of this lack of support.
By running trips which engage participants in fun, challenging and empowering recreational activities such as surfing we aim to promote the physical and mental health and well being of indigenous youth from disadvantaged communities.
Promoting leadership by empowering participants to take on Youth Leader roles provides a chance for individuals to become role models for future trip participants and to further develop communication skills and enhance life choices.
I believe the solution lies in kids having the opportunity to travel and develop their self-esteem and self-confidence in order to feel that they can make positive contributions in their lives.
