We plan to implement a proven 1-year training program to significantly improve the teaching skills of 100 rural school teachers in Karnataka, India. This will benefit 40,000 underprivileged children on a sustained basis.
Children in the backward districts of Karnataka, India learn very little in schools due to the inadequate quality of teaching. Last year, just 46% and 29% passed the Class 10 and Class 12 exams respectively, leading to very little faith in the schoolteachers and school system. Even trained teachers do not know how to effectively use engaging teaching strategies for improved classroom learning.
The Teacher Foundation's Merugu program is a 1-year sustained program that equips teachers with proven skills and strategies to improve school learning. The program has 10 workshops (each dealing with one key skill) and 2 rounds of customized school-based support. Teachers coming out of the Merugu program have been found using these strategies much more effectively. The program's impact is on all the students a teacher teaches in the rest of her career - approximately 400 children.
The program with teachers is proven to change teacher behavior, making classes much more engaging and enabling better student learning. The project will provide better teaching skills to 100 teachers working in backward, rural areas. Our impact studies show a 50% improvement in most factors related to teacher-student interaction in the class. This project will potentially impact over 40,000 children with better teacher-student interaction, better learning opportunity and better performance.
