Our project, the Empower the Youth Development focuses on improving food security, cultural awareness and physical activity in the impoverished region of Bajo Lempa, El Salvador. This project impacts the lives of over 800 youth by increasing access to healthy foods for better health, and encouraging community involvement for a decrease in criminal activity in the region.
Currently, there are 3 daycare centers providing care for 160 children in the rural Bajo Lempa region of El Salvador. These daycare centers are critically underfunded by the government, and struggle to provide nutritionally adequate meals under an already-stretched budget. In addition, annual flooding and natural disasters coupled with poor drainage systems frequently wipe-out local crops, making food sustainability a crucial issue in the communities of the already impoverished region.
This project aims to support the youth and children of Bajo Lempa, as they are the most vulnerable group affected by the social phenomena of crime and violence in El Salvador. The soccer tournament and the school of music involves the participation of all the communities, 29 in all. It will strengthened the knowledge of their culture and foster youth development.The support of the Daycare Centers with the purpose of improving the quality of life of children in Bajo Lempa.
The GlobeMed model focuses on long-term, invested partnerships in order to achieve sustainable results. Community-run organic gardens and educational programs are designed to empower community members to take charge of their own health. Though our project focuses on the 160 children in the daycare centers, these interventions reach out to educate and build capacity for their families, the daycare center staff, and the surrounding community.
