Challenge

20 families in northern Guatemala have established a self-governing community, are building homes, and are in the process of buying land for the first time in their families' lives. These funds will provide them with basic sanitation and infrastructure - $14,300 total will fund a water tank/piping for potable water ($3,500), stoves, latrines and wash basins ($10,800, or $540/family)

Solution

Materials will be purchased & staff provided to assist the community in siting a water tank, then piping water to each home. Each family will have a composting latrine, a washbasin and a stove that is fuel efficient & vented to improve health impact.

Long-Term Impact

The families have never owned land or had access to education/skills to create economic opportunities for themselves. This project further invests in the quality of life and health so that their economic prospects improve.
