This project will improve the health status of 300 families with about 1,000 children under 6 years by providing medical care, health education, and treatment for malnutrition in Mukuru slums for 1 year.
According to the World Health Organization diarrhea is the second leading cause of death in under-fives in Kenya. Children living in slums are more likely to die from diarrhea than those from wealthier parts of the same city and rural areas. According to UN Habitat, death rates for children under five years in Nairobi Slums are double the city's average and greater than for rural areas. Chronic under-nutrition, such as stunting, wasting, and underweight stand at 37%, 7% and 16% respectively.
This project will train caregivers, 65% of whom are between 15 to 24 years old on basic hygiene, health care and nutrition. Their children will be immunized, dewormed and treated for water-borne diseases; those severely malnourished will be provided with food for one year.
Caregivers will have understanding on basic hygiene, health care and nutrition that will help them to keep their families healthy. Good health during 0-6 years promotes healthy brain development and helps prevent developmental delays.
