Deaf children and youth can't access information when oral method is used as medium of instruction at school. The project seeks to apply visual method of teaching and learning that will lead to active participation in education process.
The oral method of education emphasizes the use of spoken language as a medium of instruction for Deaf children at school. However to be deaf means not to hear.By implication, however, they can't access information through spoken language.Lack of access to information excludes deaf child from the education process. This explains why deaf children in Kenya don't have access to basic education beyond the primary school level. The program will improve accessibility by emphasizing use of visual method.
We raise public awareness on educational matters of the Deaf children. We provide training to parents and teachers to equip them with some signing skills to ease communication with deaf children at home, school and community. We hold group meetings and discussions with parents and educators on alternative options on deaf children education. We sponsor deaf children and youth from poor families to get an education. We supply textbooks, stationery, personal items to poor deaf children in school.
Stakeholders will be able to recognize and appreciate deaf children just like non-disabled children. They will jointly organize resources and support the development of services that ensure equal access to quality education for deaf children. 500 teachers will become competent in sign Language required for academic content. And efficiently use it as a language of instruction in the learning process. There will be a 50% increase in number of deaf children enrolled in school to get an education
