Foundation for Older Persons' Development (FOPDEV) works to empower 105 volunteers to provide quality care to 186 impoverished older people. We provide capacity building to the volunteer group, which includes management skills, older people's rights and health care training, so that the group can enable disadvantaged older people to access their rights and health care services. Your donation helps to empower the volunteer group, and provides valued home care visits to at-risk older people.
The number of older people alone with no voice, living in poverty, disabled or bedridden is increasing. They lack the resources to access care, benefits and services. Mobility issues, health conditions and poverty mean they go without food. Long-term care of the frail elderly does not exist. FOPDEV, the only NGO in Thailand, fights for raising awareness of issues of disadvantaged older people through advocacy efforts and by empowering volunteers to mobilize to address older people's needs.
At present the volunteers' group provides limited home care visits and rights information activities, it wants to recruit new volunteers, collect comprehensive data and needs assessments, provide improved services and expand activities to further reduce needs regarding social isolation, health and nutrition, and campaign locally to raise awareness on the issues facing disadvantaged older residents. This project would support us in its capacity building support and training of the volunteers.
The project will be sustainable and address the real needs of disadvantaged older people. Activities will raise awareness amongst local communities and leaders to become involved and contribute to advocacy efforts at local and national levels. The need for long-term care is a question which the government has not yet answered even though the number of older people in Thailand is 13%. We endeavor to put disadvantaged older people on the agenda.
