This year, we hit a record: We distributed more than 10,000 presents, winter-wear items and specialty gifts to more than 3,000 needy families from 103 city neighborhoods. Thank you all for your generous support.
Toys and other in-kind donations poured in from donors and supportive corporations throughout New York. Some 48 volunteers supported the actual gift and food distribution days. Starting with the Halloween Season, we had a total of nine special-event days, which included many fun activities, like Face-Painting for hundreds of kids by a professional Hollywood Make-Up Artist, and Thanksgiving Feasts in two Mobile Outreach locations, where more than 1,000 clients received a warm turkey dinner.
Of course, the highlights of the season were the Xmas gift-giving events. Santa was personally on hand to give each and every child a new stuffed furry friend. And every one of the more than 2,800 children who attended these events was thrilled to pick their own presents. Their parents—as well as other adults and seniors—were also able to select gifts for themselves and for any children who could not attend.
Thanks to the phenomenal support of our many seasonal volunteers, these special events were well organized, allowing the children enough time to choose gifts that were appropriate to their age and interests.
Needless to say, considering that the level of neediness in our communities this year was some 40% higher than last year, we have already begun to collect gifts for the 2012/13 Holiday Season. This is a task that must be managed responsibly throughout the year, to ensure that it does not disrupt our regular, weekly, Hunger Relief, Nutritional Education, Economic Empowerment and Advocacy work.
Although our Holiday Season was a major success, we still need your help. Please support our ongoing funding initiative for 2012 entitled “CONFRONTING HUNGER, HOMELESSNESS AND POVERTY.”
Thank you again.
