Tsunami Recovery in Five Coastal Villages, India

Tsunami three years later

Tsunami three years later
Three years after Indian Ocean nations were lashed by massive tsunamis, somber ceremonies were held Wednesday December 27, 2007 to recall those lost in one of the worst natural catastrophes in modern times. In India, where more than 16,000 people died, especially in Tamil Nadu and Kerala, hundreds of survivors, mostly poor fishermen and their families, held a procession in Nagapattinam district in southern Tamil Nadu state, where more than 6,000 people died. Many houses still need to be rebuilt.

Fishermen with new boats in Tamil Nadu

Fishermen with new boats in Tamil Nadu
This post tsunami reconstruction project does not finance fishing boats as there is no more immediate needs for it three years after the tsunami . Basic relief has given way to the long and difficult process of reconstruction. Project is focusing on specific actions to help people live normally again whatever their trade and for children to go to school, key for the future.

Post-tsunami kids in Devanappatinam
Some of these children lost their mother to the tsunami. When we met them end January 2006, with pride they run and jumped fearlessly and joyfully into the sea that almost killed them one year earlier.
