Summary
This project allows 100 public school students to participate in workshops that result in a nationally distributed book. Students gain writing skills, one-on-one support, and grow creatively.
What is the issue, problem, or challenge?
826 serves students with limited resources and English skills. We target public school students with the highest needs. According to Pulitzer-Prize winning author Michael Chabon: “826 helps young people learn that language can be play, that work can be joyful, and that they themselves can be the inventors and caretakers of their world. I have seen it with my own eyes. 826 is a good thing in a world of bad things, and a good place in a world of hard ones.”
How will this project solve this problem?
826 chapters will hold a series of workshops for students led by local professionals. Selections of the students’ work will be published. During the process, 826 staff and tutors will provide undivided attention and a safe environment for students.
Potential Long Term Impact
The project will serve 100 students across the country and allow them to participate in a high-stakes educational project. They will gain writing skills, confidence in their work, and recognition for months of hard work and dedication.
Project Message
826 pumped life into my teaching, connected my classroom to the outside world, and gave my students individual attention. 826 shares a commitment to young people, and respect for teachers’ real work.
