Sudan: Unify and Empower Women in Crisis

Summary

Meeting the immediate needs of women and girls who are struggling to stay alive in refugee camps in Darfur, and organizing women farmers in Elgedarif to prevent further resource conflict in Sudan.

What is the issue, problem, or challenge?

Large humanitarian agencies have been evacuating Darfur over the last year, dramatically reducing aid. Conditions are horrific and worsening: women face a systematic campaign of gang rape; children fear for their lives; families lack basic necessities, like enclosed toilets. As in the rest of Africa, women carry the burden of agricultural production. However, women farmers are kept from organizing, and therefore, from the benefits of subsidy and credit programs available to male farmers.

How will this project solve this problem?

1. Send Emergency Aid: school supplies; medicines; radios; shoes; etc. 2. Organize Women’s Farmers Union: women are unable to access credit or subsidies. 3. Education: raise awareness in US about the conflict in Sudan and the effect of US policies

Potential Long Term Impact

MADRE’s decades-long experience has taught us that emergencies like this one will leave survivors in crisis for a long time. That’s why we’re supporting the efforts of women’s organizations to provide long-term solutions along with emergency relief.
