Konbit Sante works to support the development of a sustainable health care system in northern Haiti. One of our major initiatives is supply chain management- helping get and manage medicine, medical equipment and supplies to people who need them. Konbit Sante has donated warehouse space in Portland, Maine where we collect & manage donations of medical supplies, & have sent 14 40 foot containers to Haiti. The average value of each container is over $150,000. Help us send our next container!
There are chronic shortages of medical equipment, medical supplies and medicine at the public health facilities in Haiti. The Justinien Hospital is the second largest public hospital in Haiti & does not have the financial resources to purchase the items they need. Also, many items are not available locally. Highly trained medical staff are powerless to prevent and treat illnesses if they do not have the equipment and medicine to treat their patients.
Sending containers of medical supplies are highly valued by everyone at the hospital. The containers we send ONLY include items that were directly requested by staff and personnel at the hospital. We manage lists of essential items and seek donations in the US. We repair, service, clean and sort all donations so that they are the highest quality. We do not send anything that will go to waste or is not urgently needed, as unusable items that are sent to Haiti will cause environmental damage.
Our next container will include items such as a sonogram machine, an ultrasound, 1500 birthing kits (for safer births for women) 5 incubators, and much more. Currently, the Justinien Hospital does not have one working incubator. The supplies and materials we send reach patients who are in need. We have staff in Haiti who conduct inventory, make sure the supplies and equipment reach their intended destination, and provide maintenance so the equipment lasts.
I travel to Cap Haitien often for Konbit Sante and am deeply moved every time I see the needs in pediatrics. The items on this container can make a difference for the children of Cap Haitien.
