Help restore 500 waste pickers' burnt down homes

Early in the morning about a week ago a fire broke out in the waste picker slum called Ghazipur Dairy. Here hundreds of families live in plastic and bamboo shacks, meaning that the fire spread quickly. In only a couple of hours more than 350 families had lost their homes and all their belongings. This, during the coldest season of the year. Please help us support these families to rebuild their homes and protect them against the cold.

What is the issue, problem, or challenge?

In the slums of Delhi, houses are built with plastic tarp and bamboo coverings. Cooking is done through simple wood fire stoves, and electricity, water and other services are provided through informal networks. Fires are therefore a common occurrence. Over 75 000 waste picker families live in this way in the Delhi area alone. In Ghazipur Dairy, where over 500 families reside, there was a large fire last week which destroyed over 350 homes. We appeal to your help to rebuild their homes.

How will this project solve this problem?

Through the funds raised within this project we will rebuild the homes of the affected families, giving them shelter from the cold and reducing the risk - especially for the children - of illness or death.

Potential Long Term Impact

We will provide 350 families with the necessary materials and support to rebuild their homes and move forward with their livelihoods. Without this support there will most certainly be families who cannot manage to get through the winter cold.
