CLC provides free language and literacy education to up to 100 undocumented migrants, refugees and other community members living along the Thai-Burmese border. The acquisition of language and literacy skills boosts disenfranchised migrants’ confidence level, skill set, and earning potential. Consequently, it reduces their risk of being trafficked into exploitive labor situations and the sex industry. CLC is now in its seventh year of operation. At this time, CLC includes 7 classes consisting of different levels of Thai and English. Classes are held in the evenings as to allow young people and adults to attend after work or school.
CLC has been running regularly for the last few months with adult students meeting three evenings per week, young learners meeting five evenings per week, and adult monks and novice monks also meeting five evenings per week. Thanks to all of your generous assistance, CLC has continued to provide vital English and Thai language education support to over 100 members of the Mae Sai community including children, teenagers, and adults.
CLC classes are taught by both Thai staff and international volunteers, who stay with us for a minimum of 6 months. In September, our newest international volunteer – a young teacher from the United States – joined us and began teaching CLC’s Adult English classes as part of her volunteer duties in Mae Sai.
The most up to date news about activities at DEPDC can be found on our blog. Also look out for our upcoming January edition of our quarterly newsletter where you can read a first-hand account of working at DEPDC from our newest international volunteer as well as other updates from DEPDC.
On behalf of the students at CLC, I thank you humbly for your meaningful support. Your donations proudly assert that everyone has the right to learn in order to thrive and grow! Happy holidays from all of us here at DEPDC.
Thank you so much,
Alinda Suya
