Summary

Nearly half of America's National Guard and Reserve service members take a pay cut to serve our country. Even worse, our Wounded Heroes face an even tougher battle when they can no longer perform their jobs or struggle to get proper benefits due to their injuries. We want to ease the hardship that our Heroes face upon returning home from combat. We provide hardship grants for Wounded Heroes and help bridge the gap between civilian and military incomes that debilitate U.S. military families

What is the issue, problem, or challenge?

Almost half of all Guardsmen and Reservists take a pay cut when they leave their civilian jobs to serve our country. Our Wounded Heroes may not be able to return to their civilian jobs due to their injuries and often have trouble receiving proper benefits in a timely manner. A third of children in military families experience anxiety upon the deployment of their parent. The number of suicides among Reservists and National Guardsmen nearly doubled in 2010.

How will this project solve this problem?

We want to raise awareness about this issue and, at the same time, help our service members in the Guard and Reserves bridge the gap between their civilian and military incomes. We will also provide financial assistance to qualified military personnel in any branch that has been wounded in Iraq or Afganistan.

Potential Long Term Impact

A number of employers assist Guard and Reserve soldiers by subsidizing their incomes when they are deployed; however, this is the exception NOT a rule. The U.S. Government should enact legislation that makes it mandatory for the government to subsidize incomes of soldiers when their military income is significantly less than their civilian income.

Project Message

I was astonished to learn the number of Guardsmen and Reservists that are financially harmed when they are called up to serve. Something needs to be done and our soldiers deserve our help.
