A tremendous holiday gift was received from Robbie Schaefer of OneVoice.  The team held a special LaLaLove Fundraiser for Take Heart Association Project children on December 2, 2012. The event was very successful and all proceeds will be used to sponsor heart surgeries for children on the waitlist.

As THAP continues to grow with new services, partners and expanded network, your continued support is most appreciated. We look forward to greater achievements in 2013 through the heart program and Family Support Center.

Children & Charity International and THAP thank you for your patronage in helping change the lives of many deserving families, one child at a time!

Joyful Months

Victor Kamau catherization at Mater Hospital
Victor Kamau catherization at Mater Hospital

Late spring into summer were very eventful months as several THAP children received much needed heart surgeries and medical treatment as follows:

  • Baby Victor had catheterization on April 12, 2012 at Mater Hospital, Nairobi Kenya.
  • Baby Brian received surgery on June 13, 2012 at Mater Hospital, Nairobi Kenya
  • Joseph received surgery on June 19, 2012 at Aswan Medical Center, Aswan, Egypt through the Chain of Hope.
  • Mary received surgery in early August 2012 at Mater Hospital, Nairobi, Kenya.

Forty- four children and families received other services that included:

Echograms – 4, Evaluation – 1, Lab test – 1, Medicine – 14

Review – 10, Accommodation at THAP Family Support Center – 14

We just got great news from HeartGift of Austin, Texas that one of THAP’s patients, Ryan, was approved for heart surgery.  This is very exciting for everyone and we look forward to reporting on the outcome after his surgery.

Since THAP is growing and the heart program is expanding there is an even greater need to help those on the waitlist; educate local Kenyan communities about heart disease; and provide pre and post-surgery care through the Family Support Center.

CAC and THAP thank you for your continued support as your support is helping change the lives of many deserving families, one child at a time!

Stitches in Time

Patients in India
Patients in India

These 3 months have been great for THAP. One hundred children and families came out to hear Robbie Schaefer and his team from OneVoice raise awareness of heart disease in Kenya.  Robbie traveled from the US to Kenya and visited the Take Heart Association Project (THAP) families.   A fun time was spent with the patients, families and community residents.

Five children received successful surgeries in India and Kenya as follows:

Felister Wangari was operated at New Hope Hospital in Chennai India in April 2012; James Mwambi and Caleb Maina were operated at Narayana Hospital in Bangalore India in March 2012; Victor Kamau and Samuel Ndegwa were operated at Mater Hospital in Kenya in March and April 2012.

Forty- two children and families received other services that included: Echograms – 4; Evaluation – 1; Lab test – 1; Medicine – 14; Review – 10; Accommodation at THAP Family Support Center – 12

Our heart program is expanding as we work to educate the Kenyan community about heart disease and ways to help those in need.  The Family Support Center continues to facilitate patients and families before and after surgeries.

Thank you for your continued support which is helping many on the waitlist get needed surgeries. Children & Charity International and THAP thank you.

Delightful Hearts

At the time of writing this report, Children & Charity International (CAC) is happy to say that Mr. Peter Mbogo Kamau, Executive Director of Take Heart Association Project (THAP) is in India.  He is accompanied by a group of six - three patients and three parents.  One of these patients, Felista Wangari was on the 2011 Waitlist.  Thanks to your generosity, Felista will have her much needed life-saving surgery soon.   Two patients will receive pre-operative care, surgery, and post-operative care at New Hope Medical Center in Chennai and one will be at Fortis Malar Hospital in Bangalore, India.  The group will return to Kenya in April.

CAC is also pleased to report that the past 3 months have been fulfilling for many Kenyan parents.  They have been excited to see their children receive medical treatment and services for various heart ailments. We were able to assist these children in the following ways:

Two successful surgeries:
(a) Yvonne Mwikali Waluma  was operated  at Fortis Malar Hospital in
Chennai - India in February 2012.
(b) Master Samuel Njenga was operated at The Mater Hospital in early February 2012.

Other services received by children included:                                                                                        Echograms – 4, Evaluation – 3, Lab test – 1, Medicine – 9                                                                          Review – 8, Accommodation at THAP Family Support Center – 11

The next scheduled surgeries are planned for April and June 2012 by two visiting medical mission teams from Europe.  THAP hopes at least four children from the waitlist will have surgeries.  THAP will continue to monitor all patients’ progress by providing necessary medication and ensuring that families return for their check-ups with cardiologists at Mater Hospital in Nairobi.

With spring just around the corner, may the anticipation of those spring blossoms also bring great thoughts to you, our donors, about this much needed work to save the lives of children suffering from heart ailments. As you  continue to support this worthy cause by your continued contributions, the children and parents say ‘thank you’ with delightful hearts.

Happy Holidays for A Child Who Had Heart Surgery

Trevis Mburu
Trevis Mburu

Children and Charity is pleased to report that Trevis Mburu continues to do well after his surgery at The Mater Hospital in November. Trevis was able to receive his life-saving surgery thanks to a visiting medical mission team from the Netherlands. Take Heart Association Project (THAP) will continue to monitor his progress by providing him with the necessary medication and checking to see that he and his family will return to Nairobi for his check-up with the cardiologist at The Mater Hospital in early 2012.

THAP is now seeking financial support for another of the children on our waiting list – Felista Wangari.  The surgery she needs is more complicated so she and a member of her family will need to travel to India.  Your support now will help us get Felista to India soon.

During this festive time in Kenya, THAP’s Family Support Center is open and providing accommodations for children and their families. Our Executive Director, Peter Mbogo Kamau, celebrated Christmas with one family who was staying at the Center by giving the child a small gift and buying goat meat, a Kenyan tradition at Christmas, to cook with the family. The family was able to enjoy the holidays.

In this time of giving and sharing, we are most grateful to our donors for your continued support. Please know that your support is helping these children develop into healthy and happy children, able to attend school and do things that all children love to do.
