Summary
The Jane Goodall Institute’s Tchimpounga Chimpanzee Rehabilitation Center gives over 150 traumatized orphan chimps, often sick, malnourished and close to death, a second chance at a happy, full life
What is the issue, problem, or challenge?
It costs approximately $19,500 (USD) a month to purchase food from local markets for the over 150 orphaned chimpanzees. So far we have raised enough funds for 4 months of food, help us reach our new goal of $87,500 (5 months of food). As Tchimpounga grows beyond capacity and our resources are stretched to the limit, we need all the help we can get in an economy with fluctuating exchange rates and raising food prices to ensure these fragile, orphaned infants get the second chance they deserve.
How will this project solve this problem?
The chimpanzees at Tchimpounga sleep in spacious enclosures and have large areas of secured forest to roam by day. By exploring natural habitat together, they develop the social skills necessary for their well-being. A healthy active life style means a full-grown chimpanzee eats approx. 250 lbs. of fruits and vegetables a month, plus 30 lbs. of other staple foods like rice, milk, and cereal.
Potential Long Term Impact
The Jane Goodall Institute, in partnership with the Government of Congo, is embarking on an ambitious project to research the feasibility of safely reintroducing rehabilitated chimpanzees back into the wild.
