We aid homeless children by enrolling them in to schools and supervise them through a curriculum based after school program.

What is the issue, problem, or challenge?

There are over a million orphans and vulnerable children in Mali who are left in the care of relatives or on the streets begging for food. Mali is also one of the most impoverished countries in the world. As a result of the 2012 drought, military coup, war, rebel and Islamist Extremists occupation of 2/3rd of the country, the number the number of vulnerable children is ever increasing in the country. There are over 400,000 displaced people in refugee camps that lack educational systems.

How will this project solve this problem?

We provide a robust education program to the vulnerable children. Because of last year school interruption due to military coup and war, this year the children are attending private schools. Additionally they have extra classes in Math, English and French. They also attend dramatic and plastic as well as musical art classes during summer to allow them to strive in different things. The program also pays for uniforms as well as school supplies.

Potential Long Term Impact

The implementation of such a robust education program breaks the cycle of poverty. We believe that supervised educational programs such as the one that we provide at ACFA allows the children to acquire skills to provide for their families as well as contribute to the development of Mali. Program success: little girl Koro came to ACFA in 2010 having never attended any schools; 2 months later she was dreaming of becoming a TV reporter, 2 years later she ranked 1st in her class of 100.
