Help Educate 330 Mukinyai School Orphans, Kenya

We have continued to support needy girls in Mukinyai primary with sanitary pads in previous term and we hope to continue supporting these girls as we have discovered the support is very important to these girls. They are now attending school regularly and this has helped them improve in their class performances. We also supported few students with school uniforms who performed well in last year’s final examination and were admitted to secondary school. Again this was important support as well wishers fundraised for their school fees and many could not afford school uniforms where we chipped in and assisted them with 2 pairs of uniforms each. We are fundraising for more support on school uniforms as many in this village are really struggling as many of them are orphans and many of their guardians are poor old people. This far we have supported a good number of children and also some households to enable them move on.

Help Educate 330 Mukinyai School Orphans, Kenya

Last term we considered providing sanitary towels to vulnerable girls of Mukinyai primary school and teachers reported that these girls improved in their performances as absenteeism greatly reduced. Some of these girls are orphans and their guardians are either their grandparents or close relatives who did not care much when they miss school. After sitting for their final primary school exams, the teacher reported o us that the beneficiaries of sanitary towels performed very well but again the challenge is how they will proceed with their secondary education as their parents and guardians cannot raise school fees to take them to secondary school. For those who were lucky, they managed to get scholarships from Equity Bank of Kenya and others have applied for scholarships from other sources but they have not received feedback yet. We will be supporting more students with sanitary towels as we realize that they are benefiting our girls greatly. We are working closely with other organizations and well-wishers to raise funds to continue supporting these girls and we are also considering providing them with underwear’s as we have realized that they are also needs.

Help Educate 330 Mukinyai School Orphans, Kenya

Of late we have discovered that sanitary towels are becoming part of the basic needs and this has drawn our attention to the orphans and vulnerable households where we have discussed that sanitary towels to girl child from these families is a very scarce commodity and many girls are forced to miss school 3 to 5 days every month as they cannot afford sanitary towels and instead opt to stay at home during their periods.  This is a great concern as we have realized that many are using old clothes as their sanitary towels which of course raise issues of their hygiene and health.  We have given sanitary towels priority and during the last school term we managed to support 20 girls from very needy families with a pack of pads for the whole term.  This support has been appreciated not only by the beneficiaries but also by the school teachers as they have discovered a lot of improvement in class performance in these girls as they are now throughout in school.   We are happy also for these improvements and we are optimistic that we will be able to provide them with another pack for this school term and hope to cater for other needy girls and ensure that they are present in class throughout the term.  We thank all those who have happily contributed to this and we welcome other well-wishers to join us in helping and supporting our needy community.

Even after attaining good results in 2012 KCPE, some pupils did not make it to secondary school as their parents/guardians could not afford to raise their school and some of them were lucky to receive sponsorship from the Equity bank of Kenya.  Those who received the sponsorship were very happy but those who didn’t felt very discourage despite their efforts.  However we try to encourage them and inspire them by showing them that  this is not end of living as they have other opportunities and by grace they can still get an opportunity to pursue their studies.  We encourage them to join local polytechnics which are not very expensive and they can help raise their school fees through income generating activities like rabbits and poultry keeping.  Recently pupils have been taken through training on waste management and specifically on recycling some waste materials to make other valuable items e.g. they have been trained on use of waste papers to make necklaces, rings and bangles.  This will not only help them to earn incomes but will also help them make use of leisure time as well preparing them to be responsible of clean environment.  Some girls from the school have also received sanitary towels and 2 students received school uniforms.  Thank you for the continued support.

Progress report on Help Educate Mukinyai Orphans

The year 2013 started off very well, about 10 pupils who sat their national primary exams passed very well with over 350/500 marks and are joining secondary schools. The challenge again is the fees, school uniforms and reading books. Through the project many pupils have remained in school, and we hope to raise funds to ensure more are enrolled and stay in school continuously without being referred home due to school fees or lacking school uniforms.

The households are improving their livelihoods through poultry farming, we hope in future in can be an income generating activity, the women save on time which they used to source firewood, since now they require less firewood as they utilize the energy saving stoves. The time saved is used to do manual jobs where they earn some wages which assist in basic requirements for the children.

We thank our donors for their continued support.
