This project will help 600 needy and orphans in Nkolfoulou II Village enroll and remain in the Bitame Lucia School by paying for textbooks, uniforms, supplies and livable salaries for teachers.
Less than 50% of all Cameroonian children in the rural areas do not go to elementary school. On average it takes a student 10 years to complete elementary school; and then only 40% of those who go to high school graduate. Lack of formal education is one of the main reasons that nearly one-third of the country is illiterate and nearly 70% of Cameroonian are either unemployed or underemployed.
Funding will enable the Bitame Lucia School to hire and retain more highly-qualified teachers, make necessary infrastructure and classroom improvements, and subsidize the tuition for additional children from the local community.
Having a primary and secondary education gives impoverished children a significantly better chance of getting a job, learning a trade or going to college and breaking the cycle of poverty into which they were born.
