Help Children Stay in School for a Year in Cameron

Education is a child's future. One of the most distressing effects of HIV /AIDS, TB, cholera, family breakdown and poverty is the increasing number of children who are forced to leave school because their parents or caregivers cannot pay their school fee, provide uniforms, books, didactic supplies and even feed them.

What is the issue, problem, or challenge?

Cameroon is being ravaged by diseases, family conflicts, poverty and children are the worst affected. The above pandemic takes the lives of parents across communities in Cameroon and thousands of children lose their primary source of support, guidance and unconditional love. The devastation intensifies when the extended family and loved ones, such as aunts, uncles, and siblings, succumb to the devastating situation. Hunger and emotional distress can also prevent children from learning.

How will this project solve this problem?

Social Development international (SDI) takes a more holistic approach to provide children with books, didactics, and uniforms, pay restrictive fees, and negotiate with schools to reduce and/or eliminate schools fees, train teachers and care givers with life and livelihood skills. Teachers will be trained in recognizing the behavioral problems associated with Orphans and Vulnerable Children (OVC). Caregivers trained in life and livelihood skills will be able to feed children and help them live.

Potential Long Term Impact

Education is important for the elimination of poverty, inequality, vulnerability and brings meaningful development. It will enable people to extend their range of opportunities and choices to enjoy more productive and satisfying lives. It can contribute to the creation of sustainable livelihoods and economic well being. "Education is an essential part of the route map away from poverty, conflicts, and diseases on the road to human development." (DFID 2008).
