Summary

By providing new backpacks and school supplies to at-risk and homeless children in the Portland area, we aim to boost self-esteem and improve school success in our most vulnerable population. More than 20,000 girls and boys in Oregon's K-12 system are homeless, and this number is growing at an alarming rate. Let's change the course of our future together by giving children the tools they need to succeed in school and life.

What is the issue, problem, or challenge?

With more than 20 percent of children in Portland living in families with incomes at or below 100% of the Federal poverty level, many children don't have the supplies they need for school. Families struggle to put food on the table, let alone provide a backpack and school supplies for their children. We aim to help ease the burden on homeless and at-risk families by providing children with the tools they need to succeed in school. We aim to encourage a desire for lifelong learning.

How will this project solve this problem?

Our goal is simple: to provide backpacks and school supplies to at-risk and homeless children throughout the Portland area. With the help of our local partners - Portland Homeless Family Solutions, New Avenues for Youth, Neighborhood House, and Native American Youth and Family Center - we aim to serve K-12 students by equipping them with a new backpack and school supplies.

Potential Long Term Impact

Providing a homeless or at-risk child with a new backpack and school supplies can help boost their self-esteem. It can improve a child's confidence at school, conveys that education is important, encourages a child to stay in school, and says "We believe in you. You can do it." A backpack not only carries books, it carries hope for a better future. The simple act of receiving a new backpack and school supplies can set an at-risk child on the track to lifelong learning.
