Summary

The majority of survivors of torture and trauma living in the US fled for their lives - leaving their loved ones behind. ASTT works with survivors of torture and trauma to help them get back on their feet and eventually become reunited with those they love. Your contribution to ASTT will help approximately 300 clients this year, enabling them to reach their goal of being united with loved ones and help them heal from the emotional wounds inflicted on them by their respective governments.

What is the issue, problem, or challenge?

There are over 500,000 survivors of torture in the US and the number is growing. These individuals suffered at the hands of their governments for their ethnic, religious or social views or for their gender. They struggle daily with poverty and hunger, emotional and physical wounds, separation from loved ones and children, language and cultural barriers and isolation. At this time, over 90% of those we help come from countries in Africa, where governments there are known for using torture.

How will this project solve this problem?

The project offers services from social workers who connect clients with food, housing and language classes and psychologists who offer counseling to survivors of torture, including individual and group therapy sessions. Whether someone needs three months or three years of help, we stay with them every step of the way. We help clients set goals and provide a road map for how to reach them.

Potential Long Term Impact

When you donate to help torture survivors, you are making a charitable donation that literally changes peoples' lives. But did you know that your support is also an investment in a better society? 96% of our clients become employed, 80% return to school and 55% enter such helping professions as health care, teaching and coaching. Instead of draining the system, they contribute to it. The project helps 200 people each year to emerge from devastating circumstances and poverty.
