Summary

Help provide incentives and financially enable a student to stay in school through savings. This project provides Ugandan primary schools with educational savings accounts.

What is the issue, problem, or challenge?

Uganda's primary school enrollment rates have increased spectacularly in recent years; however, retaining students is still a challenge. Despite a net enrollment ratio of 93%, less than 32% of boys & girls reach Primary 7. By opening savings accounts & engendering a culture of savings, this project will smooth the payment of school registration fees, which are traditionally paid as a single lump sum. The project will target 100 Ugandan primary schools (roughly 250 students per school).

How will this project solve this problem?

Implement and train school administrators in running school and student bank accounts. Provide each school with a lockbox, padlock, class ledgers, and student passbooks and ledgers.

Potential Long Term Impact

Engender a culture of savings among participants. Better able to smooth the cost of education, fewer students drop out of school.
