This summer, SEE College Prep is expanding its reach to serve 750 low-income high school students in the San Francisco Bay Area and Los Angeles. SEE works to eradicate the college opportunity gap by collaborating with schools and community-based organizations to offer a high-quality SAT and college preparation program that lifts the aspirations and outcomes of thousands of low-income high school students and enables them to act as beacons for what is possible for their communities.
Over a lifetime, college graduates earn $1.5 million more than those with only a high school diploma. Low-income students who earn Aas access college at the same rate as wealthier students who receive Das. Low-income students also face student-to-counselor ratios of 500:1 in high school and prohibitively expensive test prep options, scoring an average of 250 points lower than their more affluent peers and enrolling at top colleges 25 times less often.
We partner with high schools and community organizations to offer 80 hours of instruction focusing on core academic fundamentals to ensure solid performance on the SAT as well as in college; our college counseling content gives detailed information to students about standing out in the application process, taking advantage of financial aid opportunities, and navigating college life. We employ teachers and undergraduate mentors to provide classroom instruction and small-group tutoring sessions.
Our students begin their senior year with an understanding of over 1,000 real SAT questions, drafts of their college essays and personal statements, knowledge of the financial aid process, and the specific data they need to perform to their full potential. To date SEE has served more than 1,000 low-income students in California, and is expanding rapidly. Our students see an average improvement of 202 points between their diagnostic and final scores, and more than 90% go on to college.
