Disabled children in Africa are often abandoned and forced to spend their live begging on the streets to survive. These children are robbed of any hope for their future. Our organization provides these hard working children with an education and the support they need to make a life for themselves. This project offers healthcare and teacher training to deaf students, giving them the skills to help others and the opportunity to change their own lives.
What is the issue, problem, or challenge?
Deaf people in Ghana wake up every day of their life's to abuse, segregation and discrimination, Parents abandoned their deaf children and do not see the need to educate them. In 2011 several deaf students couldn`t further their education for luck of financial support. Three students committed suicide for the fear of returning to the streets to beg. With your support these 50 children will have a better life.
How will this project solve this problem?
This project will give financial aid to 50 deaf students to enable them complete the two year training program. There are many institution that need deaf teachers, so employment is guaranteed for them as soon as they complete schooling. It will also provide them with good health insurance. It is very common to see deaf people involve in car accidents as many drivers do not have respect for pedestrians. The project will also provide meals and housing during the two year program.
Potential Long Term Impact
The 50 deaf teachers will serve as role models to many other deaf people. They will be able to advocate for the rights of deaf and reach-out to local authorities and the government to put more attention in the education of the deaf people. This project will allow the students to be independent and self-sustaining. It will take them away from the streets and also let parents understand that though they are hearing impaired they have the same potentials, if not more.
