Educacion 2020 plans to help 2800 kids of 25 Chilean schools to learn how to read, by giving tools to their mothers so they can support and encourage them to read.
What is the issue, problem, or challenge?
If you have 5 vulnerable kids in Chile, the odds are 3 of them won't understand what they read when they reach the fourth grade and 2 of them won't make it through high school. If those 5 children come from accommodated households, only one of them won't understand what he/she reads by fourth grade and all of them will graduate from high school. This project targets underprivileged children and their families, to improve their reading skills so they don't drop out of school.
How will this project solve this problem?
This project will help solve this problem by giving mothers tools (materials, orientation) so they can improve their children's reading with simple actions Family is one of the most important factors in children's learning process. Usually, in vulnerable households the mother is the only adult that can help children to read. Small actions (e.g. bedtime story) have big impacts: improvement of child's cognitive skills, strengthening of mother-child relationship, creation of reading habits, etc.
Potential Long Term Impact
We will help 2.800 mothers teaching how to read to children that are at high risk of becoming functional illiterates. If we don't succeed at this task, their 2.800 kids won't be able to pursue any other studies in life. This will make the difference between a child that can aspire to a fulfilling life and a child that stays trapped in the circle of poverty.
