Summary

Our volunteers provide one-on-one tutoring for homeless children K-12 who live in shelters, motels, group foster homes, cars and on the streets. Constantly moving and not having adequate food, clothing or supplies can affect a child's classroom performance. Only 25% of homeless students graduate from high school, perpetuating the cycle of poverty. Having a student-tutor bond makes a big difference in a student's education.

Challenge

1.6 million children are homeless annually in USA. There are 334,131 California children who experience homelessness each year. Families with young children now account for 40% of the homeless population.

Solution

School on Wheels has been providing tutoring for 20 years. Our one-on-one tutoring is the cornerstone of our program. We are the only organization whose volunteers go to their students, wherever they may be, to tutor them one-on-one for one hour a week.

Long-Term Impact

We believe that every student has potential and every volunteer tutor can make a positive difference in the life of a homeless child. There are over 56,000 homeless children in the school districts that we serve. Our goal for 2013 was to help 2,800 students which we achieved, and our goal for 2014 is to educate 3,500 more.
