No one likes to talk about torture, and we understand that our mission might make some people uneasy. That being said, there are individuals who have experienced torture who need your help today. ASTT alleviates the suffering of individuals applying for asylum who have experienced torture or war trauma at the hands of their governments. We have helped over 5,300 people from 80 countries get back on their feet and live fulfilled lives using our unique combination of holistic services.
What is the issue, problem, or challenge?
The US Government estimates that there are 500,000 survivors of torture and war trauma applying for asylum in our country today. They face challenges unique to their specific situation including physical and emotional wounds, lack of consistent housing and food, language barriers and poverty. Asylum seekers receive no government benefits which means that charitable individuals and organizations must step in to fill the void.
How will this project solve this problem?
ASTT's goal is to provide clients with the tools they need to heal and flourish here, not only survive. It begins when a client meets with an ASTT social worker. Together, they devise a "Personal Wellness Plan."The plan includes goals and sub-goals determined with the client. We connect them with food banks, lawyers, doctors, housing, English classes and other services. If a client seeks help with emotional trauma, our specialized staff psychologists provide counseling in house.
Potential Long Term Impact
ASTT helps between 200 and 300 individuals each year. 96% of ASTT clients become employed, 80% return to school and over half enter such helping professions as teaching and health care. This is a place where you can really have an impact that is both charitable in nature and a sound investment in society.
