Summary
Provide funding to empower 21 underprivileged and academically talented girls in sub-Saharan Africa to attend and succeed in secondary school.
What is the issue, problem, or challenge?
In Malawi, schooling past the primary level is not free, and high school is an expense most families cannot afford--subsisting on average on about $1.00/day. Talented, but impoverished girls in Malawi are at a particular disadvantage since they often place into the most expensive boarding schools but are the least able to pay for them. Our scholars often represent the first girls in their villages to graduate from high school, and certainly the first in their families.
How will this project solve this problem?
AGE provides comprehensive scholarships to 20 Malawian girls attending some of the best secondary schools in the country. AGE scholars also receive career guidance mentoring, and sexual & reproductive health education to help them succeed in life.
Potential Long Term Impact
An educated female improves the lives of her family and community because she is empowered to make healthy, informed decisions. She advocates for herself and reduces the instance of HIV/AIDS. She qualifies for better jobs, improving the economy.
