Summary

The Alliance to Save Energy needs tools to properly identify breaks and deficiencies in water and wastewater system infrastructure in order to minimize energy and water losses and deliver safe water to municipalities in South Africa. Using capital equipment, the Alliance can identify specific breaks to pipelines and meters; then strategize effective efficiency measures that will improve the lives of 1 million people in the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality (NMBM), a drought prone area.

What is the issue, problem, or challenge?

Plumbing infrastructure throughout parts of South Africa is dilapidated due to age, over-use, and inadequate maintenance. A net result is gross wastage of potable water, the cost of which often defaults back to the municipality. The Alliance will focus on NMBM's pumping system. Pumps consume a lot of energy to distribute water to the masses. Over time, an inefficient pump requires more energy to move water and increases the utility's energy costs.

How will this project solve this problem?

The Alliance has developed strategies for water metering and pressure management, conducted pump and motor analyses to determine maximum efficiencies, and helped cities secure financing for more costly improvements under its 'Watergy' (water & energy) program. The Alliance will assess NMBM's pump stations, replace plant equipment, and map out an energy management strategy. The Alliance will train local 'caretakers' with mechanical, electrical, and plumbing skills to maintain pump stations.

Potential Long Term Impact

Energy savings will reduce the base load on the electric grid- achieving measurable reductions in greenhouse gas emissions. Efficiency measures will improve the delivery of water and increase access of this scarce resource to NMBM. An improved water and wastewater system will improve operations, bill collection, and the financial standing of NMBM. The implementation of energy and water savings could create much-needed jobs in the metropolitan area.
