Maharashtra Arogya Mandal’s Sickle Cell Project
Report of Sickle cell Diagnostic and Medical Camp July 2013

Maharashtra Arogya Mandal (MAM) conducted free sickle cell health check up and diagnostic campfrom 27 to 29th July 2013. During the Pune to Dhadgaon journey we had medical check up and medicinal kitwas given to our 4 old diagnosed sickle cell patients from Dhule and Jalgaon districts at Shankar Mandir, Dhule,Maharashtra.
On Sunday 28th July 2013, 298 old diagnosed sickle cell patients were clinically examined and were given free medications. Also screening (blood testing) of new 89 tribal individuals was done among which 34 were diagnosed as carriers and 30 patients were identified as sufferers. Advice and counselling regarding the dietary and behavioural regime was given to both old and new patients. The carriers were provided with counselling,emphasis was given on pre/ post marital guidance. The 25 individuals were diagnosed as normal (without sickle cell disease) were also guided for this socio-medical problem.
On 29th July 2013 (Monday), 265 old patients were clinically examined and provided with medications and 60 newtribal individuals were screened for sickle cell disease. In newly screened 8 patients were diagnosed as sufferers and 28 were diagnosed as carriers and 24 individuals were diagnosed as normal i.e. without sickle cell.
All the individuals were from different tribal parts of Nandurbar, Dhule district of Maharashtra and from the neighbouring states viz. Gujarat and Madhya Pradesh mostly from low socio economic class. In this camp Nutritious laddos (foodsupplement) and biscuits distribution was done to sickle cell patients.
